The much-anticipated nuptials of former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his fiancé, Lauren Sánchez, are finally here.

The pair plan to be wedded in Venice, Italy, in a ceremony that is supposed to last for three days.

Multi-million dollar wedding

Dig deeper:

The couple is sourcing some 80% of their wedding provisions from Venetian vendors, according to people close to them, as a way to share their appreciation for the romantic lagoon city.

Veneto governor Luca Zaia has said the extravaganza is costing between 40 million and 48 million euros (US$46.7 million to $56 million). He told reporters this week that it would bring 90 private jets to the Treviso and Venice airports and a celebrity quotient that would "bring visibility and promotion" to Venice that he said was worth more than five American Super Bowls.

Where is the wedding?

The details of the nuptials have been a tightly kept secret, though the guest list has firmed up as have the reported locations for the three days of parties and receptions, including a cloister in the Cannaregio district, the San Giorgio island and the Arsenale district, best known as the venue for the Biennale art fair.

Star-studded guest list

There will be over 200 guests in attendance.

There is expected to be a star-studded guest list, with friends of the couple making appearances. Leonardo DiCaprio, Orlando Bloom, Ivanka Trump and Oprah Winfrey are said to be attending, according to Page Six.

Other guests include Bill Gates, Diane von Furstenbuerg and her husband Barry Diller, Mick Jagger, Tom Brady and the Kardashian clan.

Venice protests

Local perspective:

Unsurprisingly, the wedding has attracted the attention of protesters.

The wedding has divided Venice, with some activists protesting it as an exploitation of the city by the billionaire Bezos while ordinary residents suffer from overtourism, high housing costs and the constant threat of climate-induced flooding.

A half-dozen protesters unfurled a giant banner days before the wedding in St. Mark’s Square reading: "IF YOU CAN RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY MORE TAX." Local police quickly folded it up and took it away.

They cite the risk of disruptions in a city so overrun with mass tourism that officials are for a second year requiring day-trippers to pay a tax to enter on key summer days.

City officials have pledged that services will function normally during the wedding, and issued a denial in late March to reports that the wedding organizers had booked half the city’s water taxis and blocked out rooms at luxury hotels.

What they're saying:

"We are very proud,’’ Mayor Luigi Brugnaro told The Associated Press, saying he hoped he would get the chance to meet Bezos. "I don’t know if I will have time, or if he will, to meet and shake hands, but it’s an honor that they chose Venice. Venice once again reveals itself to be a global stage.’"
