3 dead, 1 critical after fiery crash in Juniata Park
JUNIATA PARK (WTXF) - Three people have died after a car caught fire following a head-on crash in Juniata Park Sunday morning.
The car crashed and burned so badly, the three people inside the fully engulfed car didn't make it out. A viewer shared the horrifying footage exclusively with FOX 29.
Police say the car went up in flames at D Street and Whitaker Avenue about 1:45 a.m. after it crashed into another vehicle heading in the opposite direction.
"Apparently, one vehicle had been heading north on Whitaker and the other vehicle was heading south and the vehicle that had been heading north attempted to make a left turn. That's probably when the collision occurred and, the resulting damages, deaths and injuries," said Captain Frank Palumbo, of the Philadelphia Police.
Police say all three people inside the burning car were dead at the scene. According to investigators, two men in their 20's were in the front seats. A female was in the back. She hasn't been identified.
Police say the burned out wreckage made the investigation challenging. In the moments that followed the crash, FOX 29 photographer Andrew Adamson captured a woman sprinting to the scene. She was clearly emotional, but how she's connected to the crash is unclear.
Police say the driver of the second vehicle involved was transported to Temple Hospital in critical condition.
"We have no indication about alcohol. Just based on the extensive damage, it's safe to say that speed most likely was a factor," Captain Palumbo explained.
Both cars were towed from the scene, though a good amount of debris was left behind. Car parts and glass were widely scattered at the intersection, on the sidewalk, street and parking lot of a local restaurant.
Accident investigators collected evidence and also plan to look at area surveillance cameras to help them put the pieces of the horrific crash together.
