Jewish cemetery in Philly restored after hundreds of headstones vandalized
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (WTXF) - A Jewish cemetery is now restored some eight months after vandals damaged it.
Someone allegedly broke into Mount Carmel Cemetery in February and toppled over 275 headstones.
Volunteers worked for months to repair and clean the headstones.
Mayor Kenney became teary-eyed while touring the restored cemetery grounds.
"People seem to have no respect or no decency when it comes to honoring places like this," the mayor said. "They should be honored. Should be sacred. Should be quiet. Should be peaceful."
The cemetery received over $280,000 dollars in donations from 3,000 people worldwide to upright and repair the headstones.
