Veteran Philadelphia firefighter dies after suffering medical emergency on duty

The Philadelphia Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its own.

Michael Bernstein, 46, died Wednesday after suffering a medical emergency while on duty at Engine 78 at Philadelphia International Airport.

Bernstein's company was dispatched to an assignment in the early morning hours. After he didn't arrive at the fire apparatus, his fellow members found him unconscious in the hallway. He passed away at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital.

Bernstein was a 23-year veteran of the department. He is survived by his wife, three children and parents.

"I'm deeply saddened by the death of firefighter Michael Bernstein," Mayor Jim Kenney said in a statement. "Michael bravely served our city for 22 years. We are humbled by his dedication, and we will always remember his sacrifice."

All City of Philadelphia flags will be flown at half-staff for 30 days in Bernstein's memory.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
