Police: Uber driver carjacked in Fishtown
PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - Police are investigating after they say an Uber driver was carjacked in Fishtown Monday night. A good Samaritan came to the Uber driver's aid.
It was just after 9 p.m. Monday night when an Uber driver dropped off a passenger at Frankford and Eyre and got out to grab something out of her hatch back. That's when she heard her car door slam and saw a stranger in her front seat.
"She tries to order that person out. That person motions in his pocket as if he has a firearm. She backed off. He fled away with her vehicle," Philadelphia Police Captain Sekou Kinebrew said.
"She's screaming call the cops, call the cops." A good Samaritan, who we are not identifying, spoke with FOX 29 by phone. He saw the whole thing and came to the 37-year-old victim's aid.
"She was pretty hysterical. Crying, very animated, of course," the good Samaritan said.
The SUV was a 2015 white Jeep Compass. The carjacker drove off, with the good Samaritan following him, and stopped a block away when another man hopped in the car. The good Samaritan called 9-1-1.
"I reached the police, I let them know I was following the vehicle," the good Samaritan said.
After following the SUV for several blocks, the good Samaritan returned to the crime scene to help the victim and police.
Police say the woman's phone and belongings were also inside the stolen car, which has not been recovered.
"We want to alert the public. We're also asking for assistance. If they see the vehicle obviously don't approach. This male indicated he's armed, call 9-1-1, call East Detectives," Captain Kinebrew said.
The carjacking victim was not injured. Police still searching for the SUV and the suspects. They are gathering surveillance video near the crime scene. The SUV has PA tags JRT-9288.
