California firefighters rescue 8 puppies from blaze

Firefighters battling a blaze near Bakersfield, California, made eight new friends this week when they found a litter of puppies. 

According to the Kern County Fire Department, the eight "little pups" were found hiding in a den. 

What they're saying:

"Thankfully, they were unharmed as the fire passed over them," firefighters said on Facebook.

The mother was not in the den with them, so firefighters called animal control in hopes that they can be reunited.

What we know:

According to KBAK in Bakersfield, the Bike Fire in Oildale burned 5.6 acres. Firefighters were "extinguishing the remaining embers" when the puppies were found.

What we don't know:

It’s unclear how the fire started or whether Animal Control has found the puppies’ mother.

According to Cal Fire, there are four active wildfires burning in California as of Thursday morning.
