Howie Long: Eagles 'a special team,' 'overcame a lot'

MINNEAPOLIS (WTXF) - Howie Long has reason to be a proud papa.

His son, Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long, not only won back-to-back Super Bowl championships Sunday night with the Birds' 41-33 victory over the New England Patriots.

Last week, Chris was announced as the recipient of the NFL Players Association's 2018 Byron "Whizzer" White Community MVP Award.

FOX 29's Tom Sredenschek caught up with Howie, a former NFL player and current FOX Sports NFL analyst, to get his thoughts on the field after Super Bowl LII's conclusion.

"Well, you know, it's hard to build a team both from a talent standpoint and from a chemistry standpoint, to get the right kind of people and the depth needed particularly," Howie Long said.

He praised the way the Eagles built their offensive and defensive lines, the additions made in the skill positions, and even that they added a running back in the middle of the season.

He also said that, in his mind, Carson Wentz was "league MVP when he went down." He went on to praise Nick Foles for the job he did coming in as the backup, and the coaching staff for the job they did.

"It's a special team," Howie Long said. "They've overcome a lot. You know, it might sound kind of trite, but they do kind of embody the Philly … personality."

Asked about his son's philanthropic work and tireless work ethic, Howie Long said, "Yeah, he's a remarkable guy."

"…As a parent, you feel obligated to kind of set an example, through both your words and your actions, and you try to teach and hopefully inspire, to a certain degree. And, if you're really fortunate, it comes full cycle and your kid winds up coming back and teaching you and inspiring you. And that's where we are, so we're lucky."
