Park restored by former Eagle Connor Barwin to reopen Saturday

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - Smith Playground is having a huge grand opening, and the updates would not be possible without former Philadelphia Eagles player Connor Barwin.

Smith Playground, a 7.5-acre site at 24th and Jackson Streets in South Philadelphia, is one of the largest and most heavily used Parks and Recreation facilities, according to the Philadelphia Department of Parks & Recreation.

Many sections of the park were improved as part of the multi-million-dollar project, which Barwin's foundation led the way to fund.

The outside linebacker, who is currently a free agent, played last season with the Los Angeles Rams, but he remains committed to helping the Philly community.

The park renovations included a multi-sport turf field, a recreation building, basketball courts and a playground. New stormwater management features, walking trail and fitness area were also added.

And, the site includes Philly's first-ever "bar park."

Several city officials, including Mayor Jim Kenney, will be on hand Saturday with Barwin to celebrate with ribbon cutting, dedication ceremony and day of community activities.

Sports and games start at 11 a.m., the program begins at 12:30 p.m., and a National Bar League fitness competition starts at 2 p.m.
