In honor of this Memorial Day weekend, the people at Merriam Webster decided to stoke the fire in people's debate grill by claiming the hot dog is a sandwich.
"We know: the idea that a hot dog is a sandwich is heresy to some of you. But given that the definition of sandwich is 'two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between,' there is no sensible way around it," the dictionary's editors wrote in a list of 10 kinds of, well, sandwiches.
According to a post on their website, a sandwich is defined as "two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between." Therefore, by definition, a hot dog is a sandwich.
According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans eat 7 billion hot dogs.
