1 dead, 4 wounded in Germantown drive-by shooting
PHILADELPHIA (WTXF/AP) - Police say one person was killed and four people were wounded in a shooting at Germantown and Wister in the city's Germantown section.
"Gunshots and everyone started running in different directions," a local store owner said.
That's how neighbors and shop owners described the chaos on busy Germantown Avenue Wednesday afternoon as a barrage of gunfire erupted and everyone ran for cover.
Police say it was just after 2:30 p.m.--five young men ages 19-23--were sitting on a wall outside the Dollar General at Germantown and Wister. Suddenly, a white Chevy Impala appeared and gunshots rang out--all five men were shot--18 shell casings were left behind.
Investigators say bike officers were on the scene instantly, dumping their bikes and chasing after the getaway car down Germantown Avenue. A stolen white Chevy Impala was impounded by police a few hours later nearby a loaded gun was also recovered at the shooting scene inside a hoodie.
Police sources say this may have been retaliation for a shooting Tuesday night on Wayne Avenue where a young man was critically wounded and another suffered a graze wound. Police say the suspected getaway car was stolen out of Southwest Philadelphia in carjacking Tuesday night. Graffiti on the scene used the words 'Gunplay' and '30 Shotz'. Police won't say if this was gang related.
