Husband, wife hit by SEPTA bus, killing 1 in South Philadelphia: officials
SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - Tragedy on a South Philadelphia street as a husband and wife were hit by a SEPTA bus, killing one of them.
It happened Friday night, a little after 7 p.m., at the intersection of Washington Avenue and South Front Street, officials said.
The husband and wife were both struck by the bus and the husband, identified as 35-year-old Michael Spooner, died at the scene. The wife was taken to Temple University Hospital. She was listed as stable.
Lt. Brown, with the Philadelphia Police Department Crash Investigation Division, said the couple were crossing northbound on Washington Avenue, when the SEPTA bus was making a turn off Front St. westbound. He stated they were almost at the sidewalk when they were hit.
A Philadelphia Police officer attempted life-saving measures on Spooner, but the effort was not enough to save him.
The bus driver remained at the scene.
Philadelphia police are leading an investigation and SEPTA has started its own investigation into the tragic incident.
In a statement, SEPTA said:
"Our hearts go out to everyone who is impacted by this tragic incident. SEPTA is committed to fully assisting Philadelphia Police in the accident investigation. SEPTA’s System Safety Division is also conducting its own examination of the incident."
