Police say an 8-year-old boy is in critical condition after being struck by a car at an Upper Darby Dairy Queen.

Video shows a little boy standing on the pole outside of Dairy Queen on Lansdowne Avenue in Upper Darby. His mom standing just in front of him.

Moments later, you see the mom hugging her son but right after he takes a few steps out into the parking lot and a red car comes barreling in and hits him.

"It was upsetting for the people that were here," said Faye Moosbrugger works at the Dairy Queen. She wasn't there when it happened but says many of the workers have seen the woman and her son there before.

"They come along often. The manager knew who the kid was," said Moosbrugger.

Upper Darby police say it happened just before 5 p.m. Saturday. Video shows a woman driving a red Honda making bizarre turns on Lansdowne Avenue leading up to the crash.

"I've never seen a turn like that," said Upper Darby Superintendent Michael Chitwood as he describes the chaos captured by Dairy Queen cameras. He says the 59-year-old female driver was in the car with another woman and says the driver made a U-turn to go to the Exxon station just down the road but lost control.

"But instead of just making a U-turn and heading back to the gas station it makes a U-turn then turns again and goes right into the parking lot of the Dairy Queen," said Superintendent Chitwood.

Police say the woman told them she tried to hit the brake but the brake didn't work.

The damaged car is now at the police station waiting for inspection. The 8-year-old boy is at CHOP in critical but now stable condition after police say he had surgery for a brain hemorrhage.

Dairy Queen says it's collecting money and toys for him.

"Drexel Hill is like a real close community and everyone knows each other. Everyone had heard about it and everyone feels bad. It's kind of like a big deal here," said Moosbrugger.

Police say the driver hasn't been charged or arrested at this time. They say the responding officer found no probable cause to test her for anything on scene. They're waiting for results of an inspection on the car to see what if anything malfunctioned. The driver also hit a car parked in the lot.
