Accused killer Luigi Mangione extradited to NY amid new charges; could face death penalty

Accused killer of a healthcare CEO, 26-year-old Penn grad Luigi Mangione was whisked from Pennsylvania to New York by plane and helicopter to face new federal charges of stalking and murder. If convicted, Mangione faces the death penalty.

Mangione was seen in New York City wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hands and ankles shackled. The 26-year-old was slowly led up a Manhattan pier by a throng of federal and NYPD officers armed with assault rifles to face charges in both state and federal court.

"I want to send a very clear, loud message that this act of terrorism and the violence that stems from it is something that will not be tolerated in the city," New York City Mayor, Eric Adams, stated.

The University of Pennsylvania graduate was arrested in Altoona at a McDonald’s last week after five days on the run. He is facing four new federal charges, including stalking and murder.

Luigi Mangione charged in murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO, court records show

New York prosecutors have filed murder and other charges against Luigi Mangione in the killing of UnitedHealthcare's CEO, court documents show.

The federal indictment reveals a new photo of the gun investigators say he used to kill UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4th, outside a Manhattan hotel.

After issuing state charges earlier in the week, Manhattan’s District Attorney, Alvin Bragg, stated, "It was targeted, premeditated and meant to cause terror."

Defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo said, "We are gonna respectfully decline to make any comment at this time. Mr. Mangione appreciates everyone’s support."

Mangione was extradited from Pennsylvania shortly after his court appearance in Blair County, while people gathered outside the courthouse holding signs and even wearing costumes of the Nintendo character, Luigi.

Blair County District Attorney, Peter Weeks, said, "We intend to keep our case active and we intend, essentially, to revisit the case when the defendant is available for prosecution in Blair County."

With the added federal murder charge, Mangione now faces the possibility of the death penalty. His next court date is set for January 18th, 2025.
