Allentown Family Delivers Baby during Weekend Blizzard

ALLENTOWN, PA (WTXF) - Allentown set a two day snow record this weekend with 31.9 inches. That beats a record from 1996 by more than 6 inches, and after a Sunday filled with shoveling.

Many are celebrating the end to the storm, but one couple has something much bigger to cheer about, the birth of a new baby!

Sabina Kuriakose has the story one family will be talking about for years to come.

4 pound baby Brantley sleeping calmly now in the NICU of Lehigh Valley Hospital recovering from a frantic early birth on the side of a Lehigh Valley Highway Sunday morning just hours after record snowfall.

Friend April says the roads were so snow covered she couldn't get mom Mariah to the hospital in time. Even dad got stuck trying to meet them.

"Said April is the baby here? I looked I said he's here! I turned open the car door by the time I turned the baby's already on her belly," Friend said. "Giving birth to your own son is not calming at all especially on the side of the road in a car."

The child had a beautiful and joyful birth, but the blizzard also bringing tragedy to the Lehigh Valley as well. The Berks County Coroner confirms one man died in Muhlenberg Township trying to shovel out his car.

Officials say a plow truck pushing snow trapped the man in his vehicle. He died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

In Allentown, major roadways clear...but frustration growing as residents on smaller and side streets continue to dig out into the night.

"I'm on my own. We dug ourselves out. So I can get to work tomorrow morning," John Fuchs said.
