Amtrak trains to Washington returning after 2 CSX workers killed

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF/AP) - Amtrak trains down to Washington are going to be running after two CSX employees were killed on the tracks near D.C. and trains were canceled since before midnight.

Wednesday morning, Amtrak tweeted out, "Trains are resuming service, but will be operating at restricted speeds. Customers can expect residual delays."

The tragedy happened when a train traveling down from Boston was approaching Washington's Union Station at 11:18 p.m. Tuesday.

None of the train's passengers or crew were injured.

Here in Philadelphia, FOX 29's Steve Keeley said it looked like an average, pretty calm morning at 30th Street Station, but the board show trains are not "on time."

Steve reported it seems Amtrak is waiting until the last moment to cancel trains. For example, shortly after 8 a.m., the 8:15 was canceled but the 8:30 and 8:36 were both marked one hour late - in case they can actually run.

There was also hardly any line at the information desk.

Now, customers should use Amtrak's website or app to check the status of their trains, due to the delays.

Also, don't forget to check on any trains heading up from Washington, through Philadelphia, north to New York.

CSX put out this statement:

CSX is deeply saddened to report that at approximately 11:50 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday, June 27, two CSX employees tragically lost their lives when they were struck by an Amtrak train on the railroad tracks near the intersection of 9th Street and New York Avenue, N.E., in Washington, DC. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of our employees.
CSX management representatives responded to the scene to assist with the investigation of this tragic incident. At this time the names of the involved employees are being withheld out of respect for the privacy of their families.

Amtrak shares many tracks with freight companies, such as CSX, and are supposed to communicate each others' schedules and trains' positions, so workers can get out of the way.
