PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - Do you want to be a teacher? This could be your opportunity, but you'd better hurry up. The Philadelphia School District superintendent wants all positions filled by the end of the month.
In March, Dr. William Hite announced plans to hire 800 teachers.
Thursday on Good Day Philadelphia, he said the district is working through more than 1,200 applications that it received.
He admitted it's "hard to fill" so many positions, but principals and other staff members are working very hard, and educators have been referring other educators.
Hite said there were a lot of vacancies throughout last year and without teachers, classes had to be split up and covered by other teachers. Therefore, having enough teachers in the future will reduce actual class sizes.
At this point, about 50 principals are still trying to staff their schools.
