Authorities announce large heroin, fentanyl seizure in Oxford Circle
OXFORD CIRCLE (WTXF) - Philadelphia Police, along with the District Attorney's Office and DEA announced the results of a seizure of a large amount of heroin and fentanyl in the city over the weekend.
Rosalie Street in Philly's Oxford Circle looks like a quiet place; however, in the last two weeks drug agents say they have pulled staggering amounts of heroin and fentanyl from dwellings on the street.
"We walk down the block daily and I never suspected anything. No, I got home from work one day and there was Homeland Security and everything," said resident Danielle Isaac said.
She's talking about a massive bust of heroin and fentanyl valued at a million and half dollars made on September 1 by police and agents from the Pa. Attorney General's office.
The A.G. is battling to hold each of the nine defendants from the Dominican Republic on a million dollar bail each
13 days later, the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration, police and district attorney's office were back hauling $370,000 dollars' worth of heroin and fentanyl out of yet another home on the street.
"We are increasingly seeing these heroin mills or packaging mills of heroin in our communities in residential areas. I can't tell you how dangerous this is," D.E.A. Gary Tuggle said.
Tuggle says agents took bulk heroin and fentanyl from an apartment on the 1000 block of Rosalie weighing 600 grams which included what they call "20-racks" of heroin.
Law enforcement says fentanyl and its related products are at the root of over half of the 4,600 drug overdose deaths in Pa. last year.
"The poison removed from our streets, the poison seized by these officers is killing people. It's inflicting pain on countless families and attempting to destroy our families," Philadelphia District Attorney Kelly Hodge said.
