Costco is the latest retailer to add the recall of thousands of portable generators because of a potential fuel leak.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) initially sent a recall notice last week about the risk of significant injury from fire or death because of leakage from the carburetor of Generac Portable Generators.

Costco sent a letter to owners who purchased one from their stores, letting them know of the recall. In the letter, they are asking Costco members to immediately stop using the generators if the tank has yet to be filled.

The affected models have a serial number range from 3016786070 to 3016788388.

The backstory:

The recall covered approximately 149,400 Generac Portable Generators, described as having an orange/black cover and encased in a steel-tube cradle with two wheels on the back.

According to CPSC, the units were sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s and other home improvement and hardware stores nationwide between May 2025 and February 2026 for between $600 and $1,300.

What's next:

Costco is adding an option for members who have purchased a unit from them, to return it to a local Costco store for a full refund.
