BUENA VISTA, N.J. - The New Jersey Attorney General's Office released dashcam video of a fatal police-involved shooting earlier this month.
Officers from the Franklin Township Police Department responded as mutual aid to investigate a motor vehicle accident involving Roy K. Jackel Jr., 41, of Wildwood Crest, at Cumberland Road and Tuckahoe Road in Buena Vista on April 5.
During the investigation, Jackel allegedly ran from the scene into a wooded area. He returned to the scene, entered an unoccupied marked police vehicle, and drove away, according to investigators.
After a brief pursuit, Jackel stopped the stolen police vehicle. He exited the vehicle and ran toward the officers, holding his arm behind his back and ignoring their commands to show his hands, the New Jersey Attorney General's Office said. As Jackel neared the officers, Sgt. Jernegan discharged his firearm, striking him.
Officers provided medical aid to Jackel until emergency medical personnel arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel at around 4:10 p.m.
The shooting is being investigated by the attorney general’s office, which is standard policy when an officer fires his weapon. There was not body camera footage of the incident.
