Deadly wrong-way truck crash has delays on Route 55 NB
VINELAND, N.J. (WTXF/AP) - New Jersey State Police say the driver of a pickup truck going the wrong way slammed head-on into a dump truck, killing its driver, and closing Route 55 northbound for hours overnight and into Thursday morning.
Now, drivers on the stretch between Exit 35, which is Garden Road in Vineland -- to Exit 39, which is Route 40 in Franklin Township -- are using the right shoulder. NJ 511 says there's a 5-10 minute delay.
State police say the pickup was headed south in the northbound lanes when it hit the dump truck, which was loaded with sand. Both vehicles caught fire. The dump truck overturned and spilled its load.
FOX 29's Bob Kelly suggested using Route 47 as an alternate. That's Exit 27 in Millville.
The name of the pickup driver has not been released. The dump truck driver was taken to the hospital.
