Delaware grants factory permit despite environmental concerns by residents
WILMINGTON, Del. - Delaware officials will allow a Pennsylvania-based company to build a factory near a majority black, low-income neighborhood, despite environmental concerns by residents.
The Delaware News Journal reports the state granted Walan Specialty Construction Products a permit for its south Wilmington plant, provided it installs technology to minimize emissions at the cement additive factory.
The Natural Resources Department is also requiring Walan implement a dust control plan and direct material-carrying trucks away from residential routes.
Natural Resources Secretary Shawn Garvin said the Air Quality Division determined the facility will meet regulations.
The paper says the proposal faced fierce opposition last year from residents, who worried industrial sites in the area had made the neighborhood hazardous.
Walan has said it'll comply with standards, be good neighbors and provide jobs.
