Dog shot during Chester rampage faces surgery as BVSPCA seeks donation

A Chester community is coming together to support a family dog named Diamond, who was critically injured during a violent altercation that left three people dead, including the suspect, earlier this week.

Community support grows for injured family dog

What we know:

Diamond, the family dog, was shot in the face just after midnight Wednesday during a violent episode at a home on the 800 block of Barclay Street in Chester.

One person was fatally shot and another was fatally stabbed during the incident.

Brandywine Valley SPCA Protective Services responded to the scene and rushed Diamond to one of its emergency veterinary partners for treatment.

"She was able to be stabilized. She's just showing us how resilient animals can be after suffering such trauma," said Sara Smith, Brandywine Valley SPCA.

Diamond’s injuries are serious and she will need complex and delicate surgeries, according to the Brandywine Valley SPCA.

"She suffered a lot of injuries to her one eye, which she’s going to need to have removed. She does also have bullet fragments in her head and neck," said Smith.

The cost of Diamond’s treatment is expected to be significant, and the Brandywine Valley SPCA is asking for donations of any size to help save her life.

"It's been amazing to watch how the community has rallied around Diamond and her care," said Smith.

Diamond is currently medicated for pain management but is alert, able to walk, and enjoys being petted.

"She's been really sweet to everyone. She loves to be pet, so we are giving her all the love we can," said Smith.

Diamond will soon be placed with a specialized foster who can provide round-the-clock care until she is strong enough for surgery.

She faces a long recovery ahead, and the community continues to support her.
