Halloween candy: A brief history

Let's take a brief look at the history behind Halloween candy and how it became the sweetest day of the year.

Halloween is creeping up, and DoorDash is uncovering the most popular Halloween candy state-by-state and nationally.

The food delivery company used ordering data from October 2023 to determine which treats reigned supreme. 

DoorDash found that chocolate has made its mark as a Halloween must-have, and fruit gummies and sour candies have also claimed their spots as top candies to fill up trick-or-treat bags.

  7. Trolli Sour Bite Crawlers Gummi Candy
  8. Mike & Ike Chewy Candies Assorted Fruit Original
  9. M&M's Peanut Milk Chocolate Covered Candies
  10. Airheads Xtremes Sour Belts

Across the country, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups were the top Halloween candy across 24 states, followed by Gushers Tropical Fruit Flavored Snacks in 15 states and Mars Snickers, Twix, and M&M’s in five states.

Meanwhile, Alabama favored Sour Patch Kids Watermelon, Louisiana craved Airheads Mini Candy, and New Mexico stocked up on Laffy Taffy.

DoorDash uncovered that Vermont had the biggest sweet tooth by taking a look at the top states that ordered the most amount of candy in the month leading up to and on Halloween.

This was followed by South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa and Arizona.

Another study found that some states take Halloween more seriously than others.

According to data collected by CouponBirds, an online coupon and discount website, Pennsylvania came in at No. 1 for handing out the most candy on Halloween night.

Coming in second place was Kentucky and third was Utah.
