Woman killed by wrong-way driver in Center City

A woman riding a bicycle was hit and killed in a multi-vehicle crash in Center City Wednesday night , police say.

The life and career of a young doctor who cared for children in Philadelphia was suddenly cut short in a tragic bike accident on Wednesday night.

Police say she was riding her bike when she was hit by a vehicle driving in the bike lane at 18th and Spruce streets.

Medics rushed her to the hospital with severe head trauma, but she did not survive.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Barbara Ann Friedes, a Chief Resident at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

"Barbara was a beacon of light," Dr. Jeanine Ronan, Program Director of the Pediatrics Residency Program, said in a statement. "She was loved by so many and embodied kindness, strength and a deep compassion for all who crossed her path.

Police say the striking vehicle was driven by a 69-year-old man. No charges have been announced at this time.

Two other cars that were parked were also hit and are likely totaled.
