Fire at Carangi bakery in South Philly

Dozens of firefighters tackled the smoke and flames at South Philly's beloved Carangi bakery Thursday.

Carangi's Bakery was established in 1996, and it's a South Philly staple. However, on Thursday, a fire broke out at the bakery, destroying the building.

"I eat here a lot. Carangi's is a neighborhood spot, so I come here like three or four days a week," said Justin Haskell. "Flames ripping through the roof with the neighbor's house on fire as well. It was bad, it was bad here."

SKYFOX was over the scene of the fire, which showed how high the flames went and the billowing smoke.

"With it being the holiday season, seeing these guys lose their business right now, you know, when it's supposed to be the time they cash in for all year round, you know what I mean? It's heartbreaking for them. They're good guys," said Haskell.

Emergency crews came to board up the building into the evening, and the neighbor whose home was damaged just tried to salvage what she could.

"When you're grilling, gas grill? That is what it sounded like, the same thing. It went 'whoosh' noise, and the minute I heard that, I thought maybe they put their ovens on, but then I'm sitting there, and I saw the smoke. Then I ran upstairs and grabbed my kittens."

She was home alone at the time when she heard fire engines even before she smelled smoke.

"There was all smoke up there, and I'm screaming for them to come down, and then finally I had to get out of the house. I couldn't stay in there because the smoke was so bad," said the neighbor.

Now she says her entire roof has been destroyed, with even more damage from the smoke. In the moment, she was in a panic.

"I ran around the corner, and I saw the smoke, and I said, 'Oh my God,' then I called my husband on the phone."

While Christmas will no longer be at her house, she is just thankful to be OK.

"I'm grateful at least nobody got hurt. That's the best thing," she said.
