SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - Philadelphia police are investigating the discovery of a bust near FDR Park in South Philadelphia.
The approximately 3-foot-tall bust was located under I-95 near the skate park around 9 a.m. Friday morning.
Police were called and quickly began investigating where the bust of the union general and turns out the bust had been snatched from the Pennsylvania Civil War Memorial on the Avenue of the Republic in Fairmount Park where it stood 25 feet off the ground on a perch with several other prominent figures from the Civil War.
Police found a hole at the base of the memorial just below where the statue sat until vandals removed it. The theft of the bust comes amidst a firestorm over the controversial Frank Rizzo statue in Philadelphia and confederate statues across the country.
The motive is unknown at this time.
