Hank Flynn hunts for Hatchimals

(WTXF) - Ever heard of Hatchimals? They're like Cabbage Patch Kids, Elmo, iPads and even Rubik's Cube if you go way back.

That's because they seem to be the rarest and most coveted Christmas gift in America this year.

Don't think so?

FOX 29's Hank Flynn went out to buy one.

He started at Target and one employee told him, "I haven't actually seen them in a store now for two weeks."

He tried a small business owner.

"I can't tell you how many calls I get everyday about the Hatchimals," said Heather Mohorn, owner of MoMo's Treehouse on Arch Street.

She says they deal in thoughtful toys, but she doesn't have any Hatchimals.

"We don't have Hatchimals but we do have scooters," Mohorn said.

So what do Hatchimals do? They're supposed to hatch when you play with them. According to their website, the more you play with the egg, the sooner it will hatch. However, it notes, each egg-hatching experience is unique and they can even sleep.

Back to Hank. Turns out, he never had to leave the building.

FOX 29 human resources director Megan Young found out about Hank's hunt and said she had not one, but TWO Hatchimals!

She'd simply wandered into Walmart with her boyfriend Tim on Thanksgiving.

"We were there at the right time to get wristbands," Young said, Hatchimal perched on her desk.

And she said there were police -- a good thing, since they "were a little nervous about walking out to the parking lot with our Hatchimals."

Tim's daughter Lachlan will get one for Christmas.

As for the other? Megan says she's entertaining offers.

"The Q" executive producer Tom Louden has been looking for one for weeks and even came close in line at 4am.

He may be negotiating a deal with Megan!
