Suspect taken into custody after hours-long standoff in Hatboro, police say
Authorities say law enforcement made several attempts to get the suspect to surrender before SWAT officers entered the apartment and removed the 35-year-old Hatboro man.
HATBORO, Pa. - A shelter-in-place was issued in Hatboro after an armed man barricaded himself inside an apartment and involved police in an hours-long standoff, authorities say.
According to Hatboro Police Chief James Gardner, the incident began just after 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday evening when officers were dispatched for a report of a man with a gun on North York Road.
Police say they were responding to reports that the man was pointing a gun at passing traffic.
An officer responded to the location and made contact with the suspect, who then ran into a nearby apartment, officials say.
Gardner says officers attempted to contact the man throughout the night, but he has been unresponsive.
"At this point, our goal is to get this individual out of the apartment in a peaceful manner and resolve this so no one is injured," Gardner said in a Wednesday morning press conference.

Officials give an update after all schools were shut down in Hatboro-Horsham

After the suspect, identified only as a 35-year-old Hatboro man, was taken into custody Chief Gardner held another press conference to provide additional information.
SWAT commander Jim Donnelly said law enforcement attempted to call him on both his mobile and home phone, but the suspect turned them both off.
Members of the SWAT team also deployed tear gas, but were unsuccessful in getting the man to surrender.
Negotiations continued, but the suspect did not cooperate, forcing SWAT to enter the apartment, where he was found in a rear bathroom, per police.
He has been transported to Abington Hospital for evaluation, police announced.
Police say no shots were fired by the suspect or officers in the incident.
According to Gardner, criminal charges will likely be filed.
A shelter-in-place that was issued for the area has since been lifted and traffic to the area has been reopened.
