"It still chokes me up everytime I do it," says Joe Barlow of the Hogs and Heros Foundation. The motorcycle club travels to visit wounded or injured military vets and first responders.
The band of riders on their Harley's and Honda's started their night at the home of injured Folcroft Police Officer Christopher Dorman. Dorman, 25, was released from Penn Presbyterian Hospital just 3 days after being shot 7 times during a drug call on Friday morning in Folcroft. The part-time officer was wearing his bullet proof vest that likely saved his life. The suspect identified as Donte Brooks Island, AKA Abdul Wahi, has been charged with 2 counts of attempted murder and 2 counts of aggravated assault.
"90-percent of us are them. We are all police. Firefighters. Veterans. We just try to give back," said Hogs and Hero's Chapter 3 President Chuck Fitzgerald.
Most of the riders either served in the military or are law enforcement officers themselves.
"I served most of my life in the military and I could not be any more proud of this individual for what he did for us and our community," said member Kerry Darling.
The group of about 2 dozen riders rode to Dorman's home where he greeted them just hours after getting home from the hospital.
"Family. We take care of our own," said Barlow who grew up with Dorman on the streets of Folcroft.
After visiting Dorman the group thundered around Folcroft with the American flag waiving as drivers honked their horns in support. Earlier in the day, crowds including more than a hundred police officers cheered Dorman as he was wheeled out of the hospital. He was greeted with a similar hero's welcome at the Folcroft Fire Company where Dorman is also a volunteer.
"Everybody's support means a lot. I appreciated it" said Dorman as he addressed the media for the first time.
Many of the Hogs and Hero's riders never even met Dorman. But say his bravery and his service to community is something that should be recognized and honored.
"It was good to see a smile on his face" " said Barlow.
FOX 29 has learned that Dorman did not have medical benefits through the Borough of Folcroft since he was only a part-time employee. Workers compensation insurance will help with some of his medical expenses but a GoFundMe page has been set up for Dorman to help with needs insurance will not cover.
Acme Markets has also announced it has launched a fundraising drive for Officer Dorman from customers and employees. In a statement a spokesperson says "with 11 stores in Delaware County, we had to answer the call to help" said Acme President Dan Croce. Canisters will be placed at each register location to accept donations through July 9th.
