Honey Nut Cheerios drops iconic Buzz bee from box
If you walk down the cereal aisle at your local grocery store, you may notice something missing from the boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios. The brand's iconic bee mascot, Buzz has been removed from the boxes.
Not to worry. Cheerios isn't getting rid of the bee. It's actually an effort to bring awareness to the deterioration of bee colonies.
Because, how can we enjoy Honey Nut Cheerios without the honey?
Honey bees have been around for 50 million years, but many researchers say bee colonies are deteriorating.
Renowned entomologist and bee specialist Marla Spivak said the downfall of honeybees could contribute to a dysfunctional food system.
According to Spivak's research, bees are the most important pollinators of fruits, vegetables, crops, and flowers and one in three bites of food that we eat is made possible by bees. She also explained honeybees are declining due to diseases, parasites, monocultures, pesticides, and flowerless landscapes.
According to benefits-of-honey.com, bees are the only insect that produces food eaten by humans and Honey Nut Cheerios wants to pay them back by planting more flowers.
Bees need wildflower pollen and nectar to stay happy and healthy, so planting is not only fun and easy, but it is necessary to #BringBackTheBees.
Honey Nut Cheerios' goal is to plant 35 million wildflowers and are giving away free packs of seeds.
