Man with baby, woman in the car shot in Penns Landing
Police say a man who was with a woman and his baby was shot in Penns Landing during the Independance Day weekend. FOX 29's Steve Keeley has the latest.
PHILADELPHIA - A young man suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound when police say he quickly exited his car to retrieve a friend's phone Monday morning in Philadelphia.
Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were called to the 1 Chestnut Street just after midnight Monday for reports of a shooting.
According to police, a 23-year-old man was shot once in the back and taken to Jefferson Hospital in stable condition. The victim was with a woman and a young child at the time of the shooting.
Police initially reported the motive in the incident as a possible botched robbery of the woman's cell phone, but they later clarified that there was no robbery attempt.
Captain John Walker told FOX 29 that the woman's phone fell out of the car and the victim quickly stopped to retrieve it. When he exited the car, Walker said a nearby group felt threatened and at least one person opened fire.
Walker called the shooting a case of "mistaken identity."
No arrests were reported immediately following the shooting. Authorities say they are looking for 5-6 males who were dressed in dark clothes.
