A young firefighter in Kansas City was killed Sunday after responding to a routine call overnight.

What we know:

Fire Chief Ross Granderson said at a news conference that 29-year-old Graham Hoffman and his partner were transporting a person in an ambulance when Hoffman was stabbed in the chest, piercing his heart.

His partner called for emergency help and got Hoffman to the hospital, where he later died in the ICU.

What we don't know:

Officials didn't say what Hoffman was stabbed with, or confirm any details about the suspect.

What they're saying:

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas called Hoffman’s death senseless and unimaginable.

"This should not have happened," he said at the press conference. "You never expect a violent criminal incident to bring this amount of pain to a community and a family. This is wholly unacceptable."

Granderson said Hoffman was a vibrant individual who loved life and serving his community. He said he was an "excellent paramedic," who treated people with the highest level of skill and compassion.

"We lost one of the best," he added.
