Man, 74, dies after body pulled from water at Barnegat beach

On Saturday, July 8 at 11:15 a.m., Barnegat Police responded to Barnegat Bathing Beach for a report of CPR in progress.

When officers arrived, they observed bystanders performing CPR on a 74-year-old man. Barnegat officers took over CPR until the victim was transported to Southern Ocean Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Officers were advised that the victim had been observed entering the water and swimming for a period of time before he was observed to be face down and no longer moving.

A lifeguard was assisted by bystanders in removing the victim from the water.

The victim has been identified as Anastasio Papavasiliou, 74, of Waretown.
