SEPTA incidents: Innocent bystander shot, man attacked with hatchet

Multiple incidents occurred at or near SEPTA stations in Philadelphia over the weekend including when police say a potential innocent bystander was shot twice after a disturbance Saturday night. Then, a man was attacked in the head with a hatchet Sunday.

A man wanted for a previous attempt to murder in 2023, was arrested after police say he attacked a man using a hatchet in a SEPTA concourse early Sunday morning.

Two SEPTA police officers responded to 8th and Market around 1:18 a.m. to meet a man who said he was assaulted by another man near the Broad-Ridge Spur of the subway.

The 46-year-old victim said the suspect struck him six times in the head with a hatchet and kicked him in the face four times.

Police say the man was walking through the concourse when he was attacked from behind by a man wielding a hatchet and demanding his valuables in an apparent robbery attempt.

"Despite informing the offender that he only had a dollar, the victim was further assaulted," police said.

The victim was able to briefly gain control of the hatchet thanks to someone passing by. However, the suspect retaliated by stomping on his face before making death threats and fleeing the scene.

He suffered lacerations to the back of his head and bruises to the face, and was transported to Jefferson University Hospital.

While on street level, SEPTA police saw a man who matched the suspect's description given by the victim.

Kenneth Rogers, 28, was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and related offenses.

Rogers has an active warrant from Philadelphia Police for attempted murder in a case that occurred last year.
