PHILADELPHIA (WTXF/AP) - It's an historic day around the nation and it has nothing to do with the election, other than the president's role of commander in chief.
On this date in 1775, the U.S. Marines were organized under authority of the Continental Congress.
Shortly after 6am, Good Day Philadelphia found a group of Marines marching past the FOX 29 studios, westbound on Market Street.
Later, there was an 8am flag-raising ceremony at Independence Hall, just a few blocks from where the Marines began. The flag will be lowered at 4pm.
Organizers will head from there for a wreath-laying at Washington Square's Tomb of the Unknown
Also, Oregon Avenue is closed between 10th and 11th streets for a birthday celebration. It'll be all day, from 8am to 10pm.
According to the Marines' website, "Whether it's rescuing civilians from terrorists or aiding with natural disasters, today's Marines are a willing, capable and an agile force ready to move in at a moment's notice."
Semper Fidelis! (That's Latin for "always faithful!")
