Mega Millions: Wishing for a jackpot, South Jersey residents shell out cash for $1.22 billion win

The lottery did not deliver a Christmas gift from Tuesday’s Christmas Eve Mega Millions drawing. But Friday night, fans were holding out hope for a win ahead of the new year.

Lottery ticket machines seem to be working overtime again after the Mega Millions jackpot rolled over to $1.22 billion.

"It's been steady. It has been a lot of hope," said Tom Kucharuk. He is the store manager at Mount Laurel Wine and Spirits.

"A lot of people wishing for a better future and things of that sort," he said. He spent Friday evening wishing good luck to his customers.

Mega Millions drawing: Jackpot tops $1B after no big winner

There was no Mega Millions Christmas miracle Tuesday night.

"Here you go sir. Have a great one. Win some money," he said, while handing over a ticket. Some were buying multiple tickets at a time.

"$20. $20 on Mega," said one man. Another put up more than that.

"For some reason I'm going crazy today. I usually just get $5, $10 bucks worth. $20 max," said the customer. But the bigger the jackpot the more tempting.

"I got $40 at another place, $20 another place and $30 at another place," he said. "I am getting ready to retire. How is that?" laughed the customer.

Lorrie Donahue decided to play Mega and Powerball. She gets tickets for her mom, too, and would be just as generous if she won.

"I'd share," said Donahue.

Josh Fisch says he only plays once or twice a year.

"Just an opportunist. If it is right there, I will buy a ticket," said Fisch, who has a plan for winning.

"Obviously, pay bills first, then hire people to manage the money and then look at another house. On the west coast," he said.

People are anxious and excited.

"Hopefully next time I see you, you're a billion dollars richer," said Kucharuk to a customer. "I will be very happy. I will be doing a little dance," replied the customer.
