FRANCONIA. Pa. - The National Weather Service said two tornadoes touched down in southeastern Pennsylvania during Wednesday night's strong storms, including an EF-1 twister that crossed county lines.
Weather surveyors say the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred spawned a tornado around 12:30 a.m. that first struck just south of Souderton, Montgomery County.
According to the weather service, the tornado brought down tree limbs on Garrison Road and tore siding off nearby homes. After lifting briefly, it struck the Hidden Springs mobile home community where several trees were knocked onto homes causing some structural damage.
With peak wind gusts over 100 MPH, forecasters say the twister crossed the Montgomery County line into Hilltown Township, Bucks County. More tree damage was observed in Silverdale and a metal roof was torn from a garage on Green Street, according to the weather service.
The tornado finished its nearly 9-mile rampage by tearing off a section of roofing at an auto repair shop along Dublin Pike by Blue School Road.
The weather service confirmed a second EF-1 tornado struck the northern edge of Berks County around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Surveyors say the Tilden Township twister touched down near Fisher Dam Road where it snapped several hardwood tree trunks and tore up a cornfield.
The tornado continued for a little over a mile, leaving a wake of destruction that included a snapped utility pole and roof damage to a home on Ash Road. Flying debris and tree limbs caused damage to several cars at Pleasant Hills mobile home community.
The weather service also reported a less severe EF-0 tornado that ripped through Rockaway County in Warren County, New Jersey. The damage was mostly limited to fallen trees and broken fences.
