NORRISTOWN, Pa. (FOX 29) - The Norristown Fire Department is warning drivers about parking in front of hydrants.
FOX 29's Shawnette Wilson reports.
"Why are you doing that? Because you're parked in front of a fire hydrant," asked a FOX 29 photographer to a driver. We weren't looking for a confrontation. We were just trying to find cars parked in front of fire hydrants. But when my photographer spotted one as we drove on Main Street in Norristown the driver of the car came out of a business demanding to know why we were recording video of his car.
"Are you parked in front of a fire hydrant? I am parked in front of a fire hydrant," said the driver.
Norristown Fire Department is warning residents that they are being more aggressive about having violators fined and towed. They posted on Facebook recently that it's a violation to park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.
"Do you understand why we are doing this story on this now that everything has settled down? I do," said Adam Randall. I was able to put out the fire between my photographer and Randall who is the driver of the car to get his response.
"I think that people shouldn't park in front of fire hydrants and I'm guilty of it sometimes myself for convenience," he said.
It's happening all over Norristown. The fire department also shared on Facebook a picture of a car parked in front of a hydrant in a development on Colleen Court where they had to put out a deck fire last weekend. Gabby Stacy lives nearby and says parking is limited.
"I personally have not every parked in front of it but with limited parking spaces I guess it's just hard to be conscious of it," she said.
The guy we caught Friday night did move his car after hearing us out.
"Well now I have a better understanding of that and so I think going forward I would not park in front of one because to your point I wouldn't want to be in a position where our safety is compromised because of someone's negligence," said Randall.
