NYE ball drop: Different objects that drop across PA, NJ, DE
PHILADELPHIA - The ball drop in New York City may be a staple to mark the New Year, but did you know that you can watch different objects drop for New Year's Eve in various locations across Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey?
Check out the various drops that occur on New Year's Eve below.
New Jersey
Atlantic County
Hammonton, Atlantic County, is known as the blueberry capital, so a giant blueberry, made out of blue lights, falls at midnight.
This is followed by a big firework show.
Delaware
Sussex County
In Delaware, an anchor drops along the Lewes waterfront in Sussex County.
Also, in Sussex County, there is a crush drop.
Delaware's state drink is an orange crush, so a big replica of a Dewey Orange Crush cocktail falls in Dewey. Organizers say it will be a no-go this year if there is heavy rain or lightning.
Pennsylvania
Philadelphia County
There will be fireworks, despite any rain, in Philadelphia at 6 p.m. and midnight on the Delaware River waterfront.
Chester County
Kennett Square in Chester County is known for its mushrooms. So, a giant mushroom made out of lights falls over the downtown. It's followed by a laser light show.
Lehigh County
In Allentown, a giant hockey puck falls outside the PPL Center, where the Lehigh Valley Phantoms hockey team plays. The 1000-pound puck is called the world's largest puck by the organizers. Watch the puck fall live on our Allentown camera.
Also, in the Lehigh Valley, at 5:35 p.m., a giant Peeps chick falls in the Bethlehem area at the SteelStacks.
Berks County
At 6 p.m. in Boyertown, Berks County, a teddy bear drops.
Delaware County
In Media, Delaware County, a ball, similar to the New York one, but tinier, drops at midnight. This year, they're having the director of ‘Delco: The Movie’ flip the switch. ‘Delco: The Movie’ premieres in January at the Media Theatre.
Elsewhere in Pennsylvania...
Harrisburg drops a giant strawberry in honor of its Strawberry Square.
Near Harrisburg is Hershey. At midnight, they raise a giant kiss in honor of the Kisses that Hershey's makes and all the kisses that happen at midnight. They do the kiss raise right up the street from Hershey park.
Down the road from Harrisburg, a giant chili cheese hot dog drops at 9 p.m. in Carlisle. Chili cheese hot dogs are famous in the Carlisle area.
Also in the Harrisburg area, a giant steel wrench drops in Mechanicsburg.
Near downtown Mechanicsburg, a giant pair of yellow pants falls in Lower Allen Township. They do that because the local river is the yellow breeches. So, they drop yellow breeches, which are trousers, every year.
Down the street from Mechanicsburg is Dillsburg. There, in York County, they drop a giant paper mache pickle. Drew Anderson has a look at that drop back in 2016.
In downtown York, a giant white rose drops. York is known as the ‘White Rose City.’
Lancaster is called the Red Rose City, so a red rose drops there at midnight.
Between Lancaster and York is Hallam. A giant shoe falls there. They do that in honor of the giant shoe house, yes, a real house made to look like a shoe, in the community there.
Down Route 30 from York is Gettysburg. That's where a giant Abe Lincoln hat will be raised in Lincoln Square.
West of Gettysburg is Shippensburg. There's a Pennsylvania State School there, Shippensburg University, and a giant anchor drops in that community.
In Lebanon, a giant bologna drops. It's in honor of Lebanon bologna made in the area, and the bologna is donated to a local shelter after the event.
There's a green dragon that goes up at midnight in Lancaster County in Ephrata. It's to salute the Green Dragon Farmers Market in the area.
In Shamokin, Northumberland County, a giant piece of coal, made out of foam, falls. This year, they're giving out free hot dogs. Drew Anderson went to the coal drop in 2015.
In 2014, Drew visited Pottsville, Schuylkill County, for the beer bottle raise. There, they say you don't want to ever drop a beer bottle, you want to raise it. The plastic bottle is a Yuengling bottle because Yuengling is made there.
