Obama, Curry kick off 'MBK Rising' at Scottish Rite Center in Oakland
OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - Former President Barack Obama will be joined by Warriors star Steph Curry and singer John Legend and other big names in Oakland on Tuesday at an event aimed at empowering young men of color.
The first-of-its-kind summit called "MBK Rising" held at the Scottish Rite Temple is being sponsored by the Obama Foundation.
The three-day event started Monday and wraps up Wednesday.
Obama launched My Brother's Keeper five years ago after the death of Trayvon Martin - the goal is the advocate for boys and men of color.
Monday was a day of service: People cleaned up Martin Luther King Junior Elementary School in West Oakland.
On Tuesday, youth and community leaders from across the country will hear from Obama and Curry, who will speak at the event and host a town hall.
They'll celebrate organizations for reducing youth violence and growing mentorship programs - like Brotherhood Crusade from Los Angeles.
"It's inspiring and teaches us ways to improve ourselves, to change the narrative, how society views black culture," said Jerry Elijah.
Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and San Francisco Mayor London Breed are also scheduled to be at the event.
