Pursuit of man wanted in fatal shooting leads to officer-involved shooting, successful arrest: police
PHILADELPHIA - Chaos ensued in Kensington when bullets flew as two Philadelphia police officers confronted a suspect wanted for homicide.
Philadelphia police say two alert officers on routine patrol in Kensington Tuesday, spotted the 29-year-old man wanted for a murder three weeks ago, and when they approached him, the suspect took off running.
"We've been actively seeking his arrest. When officers recognized him and did what they were supposed to do, they tried to stop him," said Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore.
SKYFOX was live over the scene on the 3100 block of Reach Street. The incident happened around 5:30 p.m.
Investigators say the suspect, identified as Spencer Majett, bolted, and a foot chase ensued.
"That pursuit went up Reach Street, went around to the alleyway between Custer and Reach," said Vanore. "At some point in the rear of these two properties, there's a confrontation and shots are fired and the individual was struck by gunfire."
Police say Majett was wanted for killing 23-year-old Felicity Vanatta of Pennsgrove at 12:30 in the morning on October 8th outside a store.
Police say she was hit by a stray bullet after an argument spilled into the street.
"She was fatally shot that night," Vanore explained. "In the days that followed that homicide, through video evidence, we did get a warrant for Spencer Majett."
Majett was hit in the shoulder and taken to the hospital in critical, but stable condition.
"Mr. Majett was armed with what we know now was a .40 caliber firearm. The officers and Mr. Majett discharged," said Vanore.
The officers were not injured. Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore credited great police work for getting this murder suspect off the streets.
