Officers spotted the 28-year-old suspect, identified as Wilmington resident Tremaine Jackson, fleeing from Lowe’s on Hessler Boulevard while responding to a shoplifting report.

Delaware State Police say he was pushing a cart full of stolen merchandise.

A pursuit in New Castle turned deadly Thursday morning when police say a "known fugitive" was fatally shot by officers.

When officers tried to stop him, he drove off in a getaway car, hitting a patrol car at the scene.

MORE HEADLINES:

A physical struggle ensued as officers tried to apprehend him from the vehicle.

Police say he was shot when he began to "drive in a manner that placed officers in imminent danger."

He was transported to a local hospital, and pronounced dead.

Two officers were also treated for non-life-threatening injuries. They have been placed on administrative leave as the shooting is investigated.
