State Senator Anthony Williams joined the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office in a gun safety lock giveaway in southwest Philadelphia.

Sheriff Jewel Williams hosted the event Saturday, December 16 at the 12th District on Woodland Avenue. The event was a portion of a citywide effort by the Sheriff's Office to distribute gun locks, in order to help prevent children from being wounded or killed in accidental shootings involving unsecured firearms.

The Sheriff's Office said the recent incident of a three-year-old shooting herself in the leg in West Philadelphia with an unlocked gun prompted the heightened attention.

Studies suggest that nearly one-third of accidental firearms deaths are preventable if gun locks and load indicators are used.
