Police: 5 men spent $12K at Atlantic City casino using stolen identity
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Five men stand accused of using 81 illegally obtained gift cards to spend nearly $12,000 at an Atlantic City casino.
Atlantic City police say William Newhart, of Philadelphia, opened a credit card in another man's name without his permission. Newhart then allegedly used it to buy gift cards at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa.
Newhart allegedly gave the cards to four other men -- one from Pennsylvania and three from New Jersey -- and the group racked up $11,900 in charges at restaurants and shops throughout the Borgata.
All five men face charges including identity theft and credit card fraud. It's not known if any of them have retained attorneys.
Hotel security learned about the possible scam and notified Atlantic City police in June. The arrests were announced Thursday.
