Police: Former St. John's point guard arrested after North Philadelphia shooting

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) Police say a former St. John's point guard is facing attempted murder charges for a shooting in North Philadelphia.

The scene was at 24th and Diamond where investigators say a street corner cell phone sale, arranged on Facebook, went bad and three men opened fire into a car, which was carrying a group of young people; wounding one of them.

Police now say former St. John's University and Vaux High basketball star Rysheed Jordan is facing attempted murder, robbery and other charges. Jordan played for the 76ers D-league team, the Delaware 87ers, last season. He was arrested on gun charges Wednesday morning at 15th and Diamond after a police chase.

Jeremiah Lackey watched Jordan grow up on the courts at the Hank Gathers Rec Center. He was known as "The Prince of North Philly" and once considered a possible NBA lottery draft pick.

"I was looking forward to him going to the league matter of fact. We talk about him a lot. He was doing it big," said Lackey.

Jamir Mitchell went to middle school with Jordan, followed him as he played in college at St. John's and for the Delaware 87ers this past season, when he averaged 8 points a game.

"He played more defense than offense, but don't get me wrong he could score his behind off," said Jamir.
"I think he was a good player. One of the best in Philly."
