Philadelphia rec center worker shot and killed, 14-year-old in custody, police say

Authorities say a Philadelphia rec center worker was hit by stray gunfire while sweeping the playground in preparation for after school programs. In a statement from Mayor Jim Kenney's office the victim was identified as Tiffany Fletcher, a 40-year-old mother. Police said a 14-year-old boy was taken into custody in connection to the shooting.

Authorities say a young girl was hit by stray gunfire while she was playing outside Friday night in North Philadelphia.

Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were called to the 1700 block of North Woodstock Street around 6 p.m.

Captain John Walker told reporters that a 12-year-old girl was shot in the hip when a gunman opened fire from inside a vehicle.

Investigators believe someone warned about the car before the shooting erupted.

The girl was driven by someone on the scene to Temple University Hospital where police say she was placed in stable condition.

"This girl was not the intended target, she was out there playing, takes a stray bullet," said Walker.

Investigators counted more than 30 spent shell casings scattered across the street.

No arrests were reported immediately following the shooting.

Earlier in the day, police said a rec center worker in the city's Mill Creek section was fatally struck by stray gunfire. A 14-year-old was taken into custody in that shooting, according to police.

"We always say ‘bullets have no names’ and here is a classic example two cases tonight where we had innocent people struck by gunfire,"
