Officer fatally shoots man during encounter outside Mantua Township home, authorities say

During an encounter outside the Mantua Township house, one police officer fired his service weapon, fatally wounding the man, according to the Attorney General’s Office.

A man was fatally shot by an officer during an encounter outside a home in Mantua Township, New Jersey early Tuesday morning, according to the Attorney General’s Office. 

Two uniformed officers of the Mantua Township Police Department arrived at a house on Elm Avenue in Mantua around 1:35 a.m. in response to a 911 call. 

During the encounter outside the house, one police officer fired his service weapon, fatally wounding the man, investigators said.

First aid was rendered by officers. The man was transported to Jefferson Washington Township Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 3 a.m. 

A .45-caliber handgun was recovered near the man, who was later determined to be the resident of the house.

The man was later identified as Charles Sharp III, 49, who lived at the address where the shooting occurred. No other injuries were reported.

The investigation is ongoing.
