Authorities investigating deadly officer-involved shooting at Malvern townhome, DA says

Authorities in Delaware County are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting Thursday, according to the district attorney's office. The fatal shooting happened when a wellness check escalated to a shooting, officials said.

Authorities in Delaware County are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting at a townhome Thursday morning, according to the district attorney's office.

Officers from the Malvern Police Department went to a home on Charleston Greene off King Street around 11:30 a.m for a well-being check, police said.

A source told FOX 29's Kelly Rule that the wellness check stemmed from a social media post.

In a tweet, the Chester County District Attorney's Office said he subject of the wellness check displayed a firearm and a struggle ensued with officers.

During the struggle, officials said the unnamed person was shot and killed.

A neighbor recalled seeing an armed man standing in the front doorway arguing with an officer who had his gun drawn.

"He was flailing [the gun] up in the air saying ‘I have the right to own this!’," said the neighbor, who first heard the arguing while cleaning her home.

After telling the officer to get away for several minutes, neighbors say the man ran inside and the officer followed. That's when neighbors heard three gunshots.

"We've lived her for over a year and I have never - in Malvern, let alone our community here - seen anything like that," a neighbor said.

Authorities have not shared information about the person killed in the shooting. Neighbors told FOX 29 the person killed was "going through a lot."
