MEDFORD, N.J. (FOX 29) - Police say a man broke into a home in Medford, New Jersey when a babysitter and 2-year-old child were home.
According to police, 24-year-old Shannon Soroka, of Port Richmond, walked into a home on Muirfield Court around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, and forcefully confronted a 19-year-old babysitter caring for the family's 2-year-old child.
"Armed with a handgun, he began to direct her through the house demanding cash for him to show her where that cash was," Medford Police Chief Richard Meder said.
Police say Soroka ultimately locked the young woman in a bathroom before taking off in a car captured on surveillance. According to police, the babysitter escaped through a bathroom window and ran to a neighbor's house for help.
"She was distraught. She was upset as were the homeowners who were not home at the time but arrived shortly thereafter," Chief Meder explained.
Police Chief Richard Meder confirms that the homeowner was targeted based on his profession. Neighbors say the man is a professional poker player.
"The suspect believed there would be cash inside the home," Chief Meder said.
Police say they believe Soroka tried to get into the home last week but was unsuccessful. The family called police when they noticed their window screens were cut out and an alarm went off.
