Police: Man shot after barricading himself in ex-girlfriend's home with their 3-year-old son

SILVER SPRING, Md. - A man was shot by police after authorities say he barricaded himself inside his ex-girlfriend's Montgomery County home Monday night with their 3-year-old son.

Police say 30-year-old John Carlos Natera-Perez entered his ex-girlfriend's townhouse in the 2800 block of Mozart Drive in the Silver Spring area Monday night just before 8 p.m.

Officers responded to the scene after receiving a 911 call from a woman reporting an assault. The 911 operator heard a male voice say, "I will kill you," before the line was disconnected.

After arriving at the house, Natera-Perez was standing at the doorway armed with a knife and with blood on his clothes. After an officer called for the suspect to leave the home, he went back inside and shut the front door, according to police.

Police say Natera-Perez confronted and assaulted his ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend before they were able to escape from the home. However, Natera-Perez remained inside of the house with their son and barricaded the doors and windows with furniture.

Authorities say an object was lit on fire and thrown from the home while they tried to negotiate with Natera-Perez to exit the house and release his son. Officers also saw Natera-Perez writing on the windows with what appeared to be blood on his fingers.

At around 10:15 p.m., police say the suspect lit something on fire and threw it out of the second-floor bedroom window while the child was heard screaming a few minutes later. After smoke was seen coming out from the bedroom along with the home's smoke alarms going off, the SWAT team decided to enter the townhouse.

Police say Natera-Perez was shot in the master bedroom of the home while the 3-year-old child was rescued unharmed.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he remains in grave condition. However, he is not expected to survive, according to police.

Detectives say Natera-Perez has had a history of domestic violence involving his ex-girlfriend. According to the victim, she said she and her son were assaulted by Natera-Perez three weeks ago.

Montgomery County police have identified the officer who shot Natera-Perez as Officer Edward Cochran, an eight-year veteran of the police department. He is currently assigned to the department's SWAT team. He has been placed on administrative leave, according to police department protocol.
